How Can I tell if a verb is truly linking? If you can substitute the verb with a true linking verb (am is are was were) and the sentence sounds logical, then the verb is linking. Lord Voldemort looked repulsive. Lord Voldemort IS repulsive. Harry Potter looked everywhere for his wand. Harry Potter was everywhere for his wand.
