Genesis Title: Genesis - Introduction: Fall & Judgment Text: Genesis 3:1-24 Genesis 3:15 (NIV84) 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” By: Pastor Micah Adamson October 7, 2018 Title

Review of Genesis 1-2: Genesis 2-4 is the first of 10 “Toledoths” dividing Genesis. Genesis 1: Tells the story of the creation and population of the heavens, earth, and seas in 7 days. Genesis 2: Zooms in on the creation of mankind on Day 6 focusing on their relationships in paradise. God’s kingdom on earth: God’s people: Adam & Eve In God’s place: Garden of Eden Under God’s rule/blessing: Obeying/ruling along with Him

Introduction to Genesis 3: Genesis 1-2 only tell us about how God created the heavens and the earth that we can see. Genesis 3 only tells us about the fall on earth, not about Satan’s fall from heaven. OT = The natural order of creation is turned on its head. NT = Something supernatural is also going on. “That ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray” (Rev. 12:9) “The dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan” (Rev. 20:2).

Outline of Genesis 3: Genesis 3:1-6 3 Lies about Sin Genesis 3:7-13 3 Results of Sin Genesis 3:14-19 3 Consequences of Sin Genesis 3:19-24 3 Deaths from Sin

Genesis 3:1-6 (NIV84) – 3 Lies about Sin: God is stingy, Extra rules will save us, Sin won’t hurt us 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

Genesis 3:7-13 (NIV84) 3 Results of Sin: Shame, Fear, Guilt 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Genesis 3:14-15 (NIV84) 1 of 3 Consequences of Sin: For the Serpent 14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Genesis 3:16 (NIV84) 2 of 3 Consequences of Sin: For the Woman 16 To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

Genesis 3:17-19 (NIV84) 3 of 3 Consequences of Sin: For the Man 17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Genesis 3:20-25 (NIV84) 3 Deaths from Sin: Animal, Human, Relational/Spiritual 20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” 23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Genesis 3 and the NT: The NT teaches: All Adam’s descendants inherit sin/death, and can only be saved by entering Jesus’ family. Bad news: We inherit Adam’s sin and death. Good news: We can also inherit Jesus’ righteousness and He reward of life by faith in Him!

The 3 Lies about the Gospel: God is stingy, Extra rules will save us, Sin won’t hurt us God is stingy = If what the Bible says about how God judges and forgives sin is true, then God is a bad god and I don’t want any part of His salvation. Judgmentalism Extra rules will save us = Even if what Bible says about morality is true, I don’t need Jesus to save me, I just need advice and a plan to get my life in order and then I can be good enough on my own. Legalism Sin won’t hurt us, it will help us = The parts of the Bible defining morality, aren’t true. I’ll just follow my own definition of good and evil and I’ll be okay. Licentiousness These are really all forms of legalism since we’re the judge instead of God. We need to accept God’s gift of salvation from the shame, fear, and guilt of sin on God’s terms.

The Lord’s Prayer in Light of Genesis 1-3: Matthew 6:9b-13 (NIV84) 9 …“ ‘Our Father in heaven, Made in God’s image (Gen. 1) hallowed be your name, LORD God (Gen. 2) 10 your kingdom come, Rule/subdue (Gen. 2) your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. God created heavens/earth (Gen 1-2) 11 Give us today our daily bread. Every plant given for food (Gen. 1-2) 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, Tree of the knowledge (Gen. 3) but deliver us from the evil one.’ Serpent (Gen. 2) [For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.] NKJV
