2013 C&MS Geotechnical Specification Updates Stephen Slomski, P.E. Office of Construction Administration

2013 Specification Changes General Changes Specific Specification Changes New Supplemental Specifications

General Changes Removed Unused Pay Items Editorial Changes – 499 Class QC Misc concrete replaces Class C concrete – Reference to Item 611 instead of 603 and 604 – Steel drum or smooth drum roller replaces steel wheel roller – Footed drum roller replaces tamping roller

General Changes Editorial Changes – Minimum effective weight of roller replaces minimum weight of roller. – Effective weight is the roller weight plus the equivalent centrifugal force from vibration.

Item 201 Clearing And Grubbing Two Insect Quarantines Asian Longhorn Beetle Emerald Ash Borer Clermont CountyAll Counties Body Length: ¾ – 1 ½ ½ – ¾

Item 202 Removal of Structures and Obstructions New Pay Item – STEPS REMOVED, Measured by the foot. – Measured along the front edge of each tread. – For steps having an integral wall, add the wall thickness to the tread width measurement.

Item 203 Roadway Excavation and Embankment Term Changes – Durable shale instead of hard shale – Nondurable shale instead of soft shale – Differentiate the geological descriptions that may be used on boring logs from the specified construction placement and compaction practices.

Item 203 Roadway Excavation and Embankment Refined the Definition of Shale: – A fine-grained sedimentary rock formed from the lithification of clay, silt, or mud. Shale has a laminated structure, which splits easily. – For the purpose of this specification, mudstone and claystone are also considered to be shale. – Siltstone was removed from this list and was included in the definition of Rock. – Shale is classified as durable or nondurable according to D. (the bucket test).

Item 203 Roadway Excavation and Embankment Restrictions on Use of Embankment Materials: – Do not use nondurable shale in the top 2 feet of the embankment that is not completely compacted and pulverized into a soil with 100 percent of the material passing the No. 4 sieve. – Siltstone (a Rock) may be used in the top 2 feet.

Item 203 Roadway Excavation and Embankment Basis of Payment: – No adjustment to earthwork quantities when the volume between two consecutive cross-sections differs by less than 5 percent from the plan quantity. – Adjust earthwork quantities when the total difference exceeds 5 percent of plan quantity or 1000 cubic yards. – Quantities still adjusted for changes resulting from undercutting, foundation settlement, grade or slope changes, and removing slides.

Item 204 Subgrade Compaction and Proof Rolling Term Changes: – Unsuitable or unstable subgrade for wet or soft subgrade – Excavate rock, shale or coal subgrade for undercut

Item 204 Subgrade Compaction and Proof Rolling Proof Rolling Changes: – Tire pressure of 120 psi for all materials (roller weights still vary by material type) – When proof rolling areas where unsuitable or unstable subgrade materials have already been excavated and replaced with granular material, use the roller weight and tire pressure appropriate for the original subgrade material type.

Item 204 Subgrade Compaction and Proof Rolling Basis of Payment Changes: – ODOT will not pay for subgrade compaction in areas stabilized under Item 206. – Removed SUBGRADE COMPACTION ___ INCHES DEEP for varying the compaction depth, because only a 12-inch depth is specified by ODOT.

Item 205 Chemically Stabilized Embankment Revised default percentage for Lime and Lime Kiln Dust when a Mixture Design Item is not included in the project. – Default Spreading Rates: 5% for Lime & 7% for LKD Added the requirement that the field verification test results must all be submitted for the final lump sum payment to be made (i.e., last 1/3 of bid amount).

Item 206 Chemically Stabilized Subgrade Revised default percentage for Lime (5 %) and Lime Kiln Dust (7 %) when a Mixture Design Item is not included in the project. If fine grading before the curing period, then do the fine grade the same day as the mixing, compacting, and shaping. Added the requirement that field verification test results must all be submitted for the final lump sum payment.

Item 209 Linear Grading Deleted LINEAR GRADING METHOD ____. – Item has not been used. – Intended purpose is not known, when added in 2002.

Item 304 Aggregate Base Defines effective weight of a vibratory roller and requires submitting documentation from the manufacturer that the minimum effective weight is met. General editorial deletions of unneeded references to Supplement 1015.

Item 617 Reconditioning Shoulders Allows side-mounted roller or side-mounted vibrating plate compactor to be used where narrow shoulders or sloping shoulders make it unsafe for conventional compaction equipment.

Item 623 Construction Layout Stakes and Survey Monuments Item 623 has been replaced by the former Supplemental Specification 823. Supplemental Specification 823 is rescinded for the 2013 C&MS. Addresses furnishing, placing, and maintaining construction layout staking, primary project control monuments, monument assemblies, reference monuments, and right-of-way monuments.

Item 623 Construction Layout Stakes and Survey Monuments Former survey monument pay items from 604 or 823 are now in Item 623: – Primary Project Control Monument, Type A – Primary Project Control Monument, Type B – Monument Assembly – Reference Monument – Right-of-Way Monument

Supplemental Specification 840 Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls Eliminated the geotextile fabric beneath the 1-foot undercut Spread footings no longer allowed Added three new systems – Polyester geosynthetic strips (GeOmega) – Deformed (corrugated) steel strips (Sinewall) – Welded wire ladders (Retained Soil)

Supplemental Specification 840 Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls Future Change – April 19, 2013 Update – MSE wall shop drawings and calculations will no longer be reviewed by Office of Geotechnical Engineering. The double P.E. seals serve as certification of compliance with requirements. Future Change – Unknown – For MSE wall backfill, AASHTO plans to revise the resistivity testing procedure to end the test when the specimen reaches full saturation.

New Supplemental Specification 863 Reinforced Soil Slopes Reinforced soil slopes are embankments constructed with multiple layers of geogrid reinforcements. Geogrids spaced vertically approx. every 2 feet Limited to maximum slope of 1H:1V New specification to replace consultant plan notes.

New Supplemental Specification 866 Ground Anchors Performance specification to design, construct, and test ground anchors using the contractors drilling and grouting methods. New specification to replace consultant plan notes.

Supplemental Specification 878 & 879 Compaction Testing Starting the qualification testing of compaction testing technicians, and validation of nuclear density/moisture gauges. Required for the 2014 construction season.

Supplemental Specification 878 & 879 Compaction Testing Technicians – Show NICET Level II Soils certification – Pass written test of ODOT practices – Field demonstration of gauge operation Gauges – Pass an accuracy test Technicians and Gauges are qualified separately

Supplemental Specification 878 & 879 Compaction Testing Four sessions in mid to late March – March 13 th at OMM – March 19 th at District 8 – March 20 th at District 2 – March 26 th at District 12
