3. Geographic and Historical Notes Montgomery County is located in Central Indiana and is bordered by the following counties: Tipton to the north, Clinton to the northeast, Boone to the east, Hendricks to the southeast, Putnam to the south, Parke to the southwest, and Fountain to the west and northwest. U.S. Highways 231 and 136 and Interstate Highway 74 cross the county. Elevation is 650-850 feet. Most of the county’s landscape is moderately to steeply sloping, though it is slightly sloping in areas in the north-central and southeastern regions and nearly level in some areas in the east and south and along the northern border. The landscape features oak and hickory trees. The county pertains to the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain land resource area. Montgomery county is in the Eastern Time Zone and observes DST. Average daily temperatures are 17٥/35٥ in January and 63٥/86٥ in July. Annual precipitation is about 40 and snowfall about 18 inches. Typically the first freeze of the season occurs October 10-15; the last freeze is typically from May 1-5, except for the extreme south where it is April 25-30. The growing season lasts about 158-173 days. Agricultural activity is mainly in livestock (hogs/pigs), soybeans and corn for grain. Nearly nine-tenths of the land is in farms and about over four-fifths of that is in cash crops. Additional important cash crops include hay and winter wheat. Additional livestock include cattle/calves and sheep/lambs. Main natural resources include construction sand and gravel, and forestland. Water resources include lakes (Holiday, Morrison, and Waveland Lakes) and streams (Sugar, North Fork Coal, East Fork Coal, Little Sugar, Lye Indian, and Little Potato Creeks). Communities include the city of Crawfordsville, which is the county seat, and the towns of Alamo, Darlington, Ladoga, Linden, New Market, New Richmond, New Ross, Waveland, Waynetown, and Wingate. 3. Location and Historical Notes Montgomery County is not a tobacco-producing county, according to the Strategic Development Group’s “Alternative Agricultural Strategy” (Bloomington, March 15, 2001) report, which is part of Governor Joseph E.
