3 3. Geographic and Historical Notes
Fulton County is located in North Central Indiana south of South Bend. It is also bordered by following Indiana counties: Marshall to the north, Kosciusko to the northeast, Wabash to the east, Miami to the east/southeast, Cass to the south, Pulaski to the west. The northeast corner of Fulton touches the southeast corner of Starke County, which is northeast of Fulton County. U.S. Highway 31 and State Highways 14 and 25 cross the county. Elevation is feet. The landscape is nearly level in almost all areas with slight slopes in the north and east. The landscape features oak and hickory trees. The county pertains to the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain land resource area. Fulton county is in the Eastern Time Zone and observes DST. Average daily temperatures are 14٥/32٥ in January and 61٥/85٥ in July. Annual precipitation is about 37 and snowfall 26 inches. Typically the first freeze of the season occurs October The last freeze varies from May 1-5. The growing season lasts about days. Agricultural activity is in both crops and livestock. About four-fifths of the land is farmland of which about four-fifths is commercial crops. Main crops are corn for grain, hay and soybeans. Sweet corn is a main vegetable. Livestock includes cattle/calves, sheep/lambs, and hogs/pigs. Popcorn is a special crop. Main natural resources include construction sand, gravel, and forestland. Water resources include the Anderson, Barr, Bruce, Fletcher, King, Landis, Lears, L-, Mud, Nyona, O’Blennis, Rock South Mud, Town, Upper Summit, and Zink Lakes; Lake Manitou; Millark Mill Pond and Mt. Zion Mill Pond; and the Tippecanoe River. Communities include the city of Rochester (the county seat) and the towns of Akron, Fulton and Kewanna.
