What does that mean?

The Main Idea tells us what the story is MOSTLY about.

Main Ideas help readers remember important information.

Look for the character’s problem or challenge. While you read, pay attention to what the main character wants or needs. Look for the character’s problem or challenge.

Then, look for details that tell you more about how the main character solves the problem or meets the challenge. Those details help you decide the main idea.

Let’s be a detective. We’ll read some stories and decide what the main idea is.

Best Friends. Ginni and Juliana were best friends Best Friends Ginni and Juliana were best friends. They liked to do many things together. In the summer, they both liked to go swimming in the ocean and to build sandcastles. In the winter, they went ice-skating on the pond by their school. Their favorite thing to do together was to ride horses in the meadow near their homes.
