2010 Shanghai World Expo Economic Impact

My Expo Story Led an Interpublic Group (IPG) Task Force to work on the 2010 Shanghai Expo Marketing (Sponsorship) Development Master Plan and Forum Development Plan, and an IPG’s Weber Shandwick global team on the award-winning global communication campaign supporting Shanghai’s successful bid for World Expo 2010. The Projects include: Global communications campaign “Bringing the World Expo 2010 to Shanghai” Shanghai Expo Market Development Master Plan Shanghai Expo Luncheon in Nagoya Shanghai Expo Corporate Participation Information Session Forum Development Plan Global Communications and Promotion Plan 2010 Shanghai Expo Brochure Expo Sponsorship Acquisition: China Telecom, GM, Dell, Siemens and Coca Cola; Expo pavilions: USA, GM Auto, Israel and Information and Communication.

Shanghai Expo Summary Theme: "Better City - Better Life“ Time: 1 May to 31 October 2010 Largest number of countries participating: 190 countries, more than 70 cities in Urban Best Practice Area, 56 international organizations and 18 corporate pavilions. Largest World's Expo site: 5.28 sq km (or 528 hectares) 73 million visitors, largest in Expo history More than 100 Expo Forums and Conferences BIE membership grows from 89 member states in 2002, when Shanghai was voted to host World Expo 2010, to 167 member states on January 9th 2014.

Shanghai Expo Preparations Organizers: Shanghai World Expo Organizing Committee and Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination; Clearing 2.6 square kilometers along the Huangpu River involved moving 18,000 families and 270 factories, including the Jiang Nan Shipyard, which employs 10,000 workers; Opening six new subway lines between 2008 and 2010; Adding four thousand brand new taxi cabs; Decorating the city's buildings along the river with more energy-efficient LEDs; Training more than 1.7 million volunteers; Adopting Olympic-level security measures.

Shanghai Expo Financials Expo Operational Revenue and Cost (by March 2011) Total Revenue: US$1.95 billion: Admission: US$1.10 billion, 56.52% of the operational revenue (2005 forecast: US$ 0.78 billion) Sponsorship: US$594.05 million, 30.5% of the operational revenue (2005 forecast: US$400 million) Total Cost: US$ 1.79 billion: Pavilion maintenance and operation: US$616.62 million (34.46%) Information and security: US$291.72 million (16.30%) BIE: US$22.13 million (1.24%) Operating profit: US$157 million Expo infrastructure and construction investment: US$2.69 billion to prepare and construct the 528 hectares Expo site, including relocation cost. Estimated land lease revenue is US$30 billion in 20 years . Total economic impact 3 times of the Beijing Olympics

Expo Economic Impact Economic Growth Expo GDP growth from 2003 to 2012 to generate an economic impact of a minimum of US$23.68 billion; More than 350,000 new jobs from 2003-2012; Data of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics shows in 2010, the first three quarters of total retail sales of consumer goods in Shanghai increased by 17.6% over the last year; $ 1.2 billion foreign investments projects have been signed at the Expo; Surrounding cities of Shanghai shows a high growth record of tourists and revenues, and with 20% rapid growth in import and export, wholesale, hospitality and other tourism-related industries.

Expo Economic Impact Tourism and Hospitality: 73 million visitors including 3.5 million international tourists; According to the estimation of China Tourism Academy, Shanghai Expo generated more than $ 12 billion in tourism revenue for Shanghai and neighboring Yangtze River cities; Spillover effect to adjacent cities: 20% bump in tourism services demand; Hotel occupancies reached 80% during the Expo, resulting in over $4 billion revenue from of hospitality industry

Expo Economic Impact Retail and Residential Property New luxury outlets there sprang up shortly before the Expo, and now the corner sparkles with high-end stores, from Apple to Tiffany; Leasing rents have gone up substantially in the main areas; Vacancy rates for high-end residential property fell sharply during the Expo, from 15% to 8%; In the serviced apartment segment, vacancy levels during the Expo dropped 11 percentage points between May 1 and October 31.

Better Infrastructure Expo Economic Impact Better Infrastructure Opened in April 2010, a new section of the Middle Ring Road linking the city to Shanghai Pudong International Airport reduces travel time from the city to the airport by 20 minutes; Capacity of the Hongqiao International Airport was increased by 60% with a new terminal, adding 55 boarding gates; Bund renovation project and the inauguration of the giant cruise ship terminal on the Yangtze River north of Shanghai; Broad sidewalks were added in front of the historic Bund buildings and a spacious riverfront promenade, giving even greater luster to the waterfront; A tunnel was built under the boulevard that separates the historic buildings from the Huangpu riverfront; Six new subway lines (186.4 miles) were opened, including Line 13 serving the Expo site.

Shanghai Post-Expo Development Massive waterfront redevelopment along the Huangpu River, Shanghai’s mother river, for the Post-Expo city-building on the 5.28 sq km, 1.72million sqm Expo site; the 2.83sq km and 3.5 million sqm Qiantan Site; and 4.39sq km and 2.7million sqm Xuhui Riverside. The Expo Cultural Center, the site of the opening and closing ceremonies, reopened on November 19, 2010 as the Mercedes-Benz Arena. The onsite 18,000 capacity Mercedes Benz Arena hosted several sold-out shows but also contains 20,000 square feet of retail space, a public ice skating rink, six cinemas with 800 seats, a live-music club seating 650 guests and several restaurants. Saudi Arabia pavilion and Italian pavilion were successively reopened for visit since 2011. The Russian, French and Spanish pavilions are set to reopen and kept standing for the next 50 years. Echoing the 2010 Shanghai World Expo’s theme ‘better city, better life’, the 15ha Urban Best Practice Area (UBPA) will be developed into a worldwide showcase of low carbon and eco-friendly home to art galleries, shopping centers, hotels and offices.

Shanghai Post-Expo Development A $500 million hotel complex redevelopment is underway, on a 47,900sq m Expo site, to build 270,000sqm, 1,000-bed luxury hotels, with shopping, dining and entertainment facilities. Expo Conference Center is the largest conference facility in Shanghai which hosts major government and business events and wedding ceremonies The Shanghai government partnered with the Bureau International des Expositions to build a 35,000sqm World Expo Museum. Construction is slated to begin in 2012 with the completion of the museum due in 2015. A chocolate park was opened at the former World Expo site in 2013. Covering an area over 30,000 sqm, the "Chocolate Happy Land," is being built in the former Africa Pavilion. The outstanding Expo Axis has been under renovation, and partly reopened with retail and restaurants, and will become a high-end shopping and entertaining place on the expo site.

1999 Kunming World Horticultural Expo 2015 Milan Expo

Kunming World Horticultural Expo Garden The World Horticultural-Expo Garden is a botanical garden center in Kunming, China. It played host to the October 1999 Kunming International Horticulture Exposition. As an international botanical garden, the Expo Garden has become a significant Kunming landmark and attracted 9.5 million visitors. The World Horticultural-Expo Garden covers an area of 218 hectares and consists of 5 indoor exhibition halls (China Hall, the Man and Nature Hall, the Green House, the Science and Technology Hall, and the International Hall), 6 theme gardens (the Tree Garden, the Tea Garden, the Bonsai Garden, the Medicinal Herb Garden, the Bamboo Garden, and the Vegetable and Fruit Garden) and 34 outdoor gardens of domestic participants, 34 outdoor gardens for foreign countries and international organizational and 9 outdoor exhibition area for the enterprise participants.

Milan Expo 2015 More than 2,000 people, including 40 Heads of State and Government, attended the Closing Ceremony of the greatest Universal Exhibition of all times, Expo Shanghai 2010. During the Ceremony, held on October 30th at the Cultural Center of Expo Shanghai, the Expo Milano 2015 delegation, led by the Special Commissioner Letizia Moratti and the CEO Giuseppe Sala, received the BIE flag symbolizing the handover between the two World Expositions. Expo 2015 is the next scheduled Universal Exposition after Expo 2012, and will be hosted by Milan, Italy, between 1 May and 31 October 2015. On November 23, 2010, the event was officially announced by the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE). The BIE General Assembly in Paris decided in favor of the Milanese candidature on March 31, 2008. Expo 2015 will be held under the theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.
