ANTARCTICA

F T F T F T T True or False Quiz Is in the Northern hemisphere Antarctica is more than 58 times the size of Great Britain Antarctica is a country Antarctica is the fifth largest continent Polar bears live in Antarctica Antarctica’s ice sheets hold 70% of the worlds fresh water Antarctica has no permanent residents F T F T F T T

Where is Antarctica? LO: To describe the location of Antarctica Label Antarctica on your world map Describe the location of Antarctica in relation to the equator. See how many keywords you can use Equator Keywords: North South East West Southern hemisphere Equator Indian Ocean Pacific Ocean Atlantic Ocean Challenge: Add to your description of Antarctica’s location Think about oceans and other continents

Map from memory In a minute you will be shown a map of Antarctica. You should have a blank map in front of you, this map needs to be completed from memory! You will need to work together in pairs to be able to do this. You will have 30 seconds to study the map Then you will have 2minutes to draw as much as you can remember Suggestion: Split the map in half and have one person study/draw each side

On thick ice… 1/18/2019 The Antarctic Ice Sheet covers 99% of the continent. In places, it is nearly 5km thick! It is the largest single mass of ice on Earth and it contains 90% of the world’s fresh water. If it were to melt, the world’s oceans would rise by 70 metres – enough to flood many of the world’s largest cities, including London.

If Antarctica is 99% ice, then why does it not look the same everywhere? 1/18/2019

1/18/2019

Ice sheet Mass of glacial land ice extending more than 50,000 km² Formed of snow that falls in winter does not melt Layers of snow pile up into thick masses of ice over thousands of years 1/18/2019

Ice Shelf Permanent floating sheets of ice that connect to a landmass Ice sheets travel towards the sea and float out over the sea Ice shelves grow when they gain ice from land, and occasionally shrink when icebergs calve off their edges Ice Shelf 1/18/2019

Pieces of ice that form on land and float into an ocean or lake The term “iceberg” refers to chunks of ice larger than 5 metres across Formed by the warm water melting parts of the ice shelf and ice chunks breaking away Iceberg 1/18/2019

Crevasse Deep crack in an ice sheet Constant movement of the ice sheet (under pressure and gravity) can cause deep cracks Can be as deep as 45 metres, as wide as 20 metres, and can be up to several hundred metres long 1/18/2019

What is the weather actually like in Antarctica? Climate What is the weather actually like in Antarctica? The _______ varies month to month. The lowest temperature being _____degrees in _______ and the highest being ______ in December. The mean average temperature is _______. There is very little precipitation in Antarctica. The annual total precipitation is ________. The month with the lowest amount of precipitation is __________. The month with the highest amount of precipitation is _________. Challenge: Compare the weather in Antarctica to our weather. Word bank: temperature, October, June, April

Reasons for the Harsh Climate Ocean Currents: Some areas of the world have warm ocean currents, and others have cool ocean currents. This is what causes the climates in costal areas. Latitude: The closer a location is to the Equator, the warmer it is. Angle of Insulation from the Sun: The angle of insulation that comes from the Sun determines how warm an area will be. This changes with the seasons. This also explains why the Poles will have 6 months of complete darkness and 6 months of complete light. 1/18/2019
