Presentation transcript:

Theory Vs. Law

Before a theory or a law can be made, a scientist needs to go through the scientific process

Observing Using the senses or tools to gather information

Forming a Hypothesis Ask a question and try to explain observations

Testing Hypothesis Collecting data to support or reject a hypothesis

Analyzing Data Statistical analysis of data to draw conclusions

Evaluating Results Data and conclusions are studied to determine whether they are valid

What is a theory? An explanation for why things work or how things happen. Explains descriptions! NOT speculative or based on a guess

What is a law? A statement based on repeated observations that describe a phenomenon in nature. Support descriptions! Laws are ALWAYS true.

Theories Vs. Law Theories do not become laws Laws do not become theories

Write this on pg. – of your journals

Write on pg. – in your own words, the different between a theory and a law. Give an example for each. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqk3TKuGNBA

Worksheet Complete the worksheet with your group We will go over the answers together.
