PROBABILITY OF INHERITANCE

Do Now What are Gregor Mendel’s Laws of Genetics?

Big Idea Based on Gregor Mendel’s laws of genetics and the work of Reginald Punnett (Punnett Square), we can determine the probability of inheriting dominant and recessive traits through generations based on an individual’s genotype.

Activity With a partner: Share a list of your dominant/recessive traits Share your family picture Answer the following questions in your composition notebooks & share with your partner: What traits does your partner have in common with their family member(s)? According to your partner, what traits have been passed down from generation to generation in your partner’s family?

Probability of Inheriting a Trait We can determine the probability of inheriting a dominant or recessive trait! What do you think this means?

Vocabulary Reginald Punnett Punnett Square Hybrid Monohybrid Cross

WORD DEFINITION DRAWING Reginald Punnett Punnett Square Hybrid Monohybrid Cross

Reginald Punnett British Geneticist (1875-1967) Formed a model to calculate the probability of inheriting a Mendelian trait Model is called the “punnett square”

Punnett Square

Random Inheritance of Genes What would the outcome be if you flip a coin 10 times? How many “heads” did you get? How many “tails”? This is an example of random inheritance. The likelihood of inheriting a gene from your parent is as random as the flip of a coin.

Activity/Homework Punnett Square Practice CLOSING QUESTION: -What is the probability that you will pass on a gene to your offspring? -What is the probability that they will express it? -What is the difference?
