Proper Chemical Handling Procedures

Explosives, Peroxidizable Compounds, and Flammable Compounds: No flames or sparking materials/equipment present. Should never be heated or handled near hot surfaces. Should not be used on vibrating surfaces. If harmful vapors are emitted, the chemical must be used in a fume hood. Safety glasses and laboratory coats should be worn at all times.

Peroxides and Oxidizers: Must be kept away from organic materials. Keep away from ignition sources including friction and grinding. Store in a well-ventilated area. Air Reactive Compounds: Must be handled in inert gases containing no oxygen. Can be safely dispensed using a syringe or double-tipped needle. Do not store near any flammable chemicals.

Water Reactive Compounds: Must be kept away from water. Can be safely dispensed using a syringe or double- tipped needle. Do not store near any flammable chemicals. Polymerizing Compounds: Must be kept in low temperatures.

Corrosive Materials: Always pour more concentrated solution into less concentrated solution while stirring to prevent violent reactions. If it emits harmful vapors, it must be used in a fume hood. Never heat or handle chemical in fragile containers. Always wear a laboratory coat, gloves, and safety glasses.

Corrosive Materials (storage): Store below eye level in corrosive resistant trays. Keep away from incompatible substances (e.g. store acids and bases separately)

NEVER use unknown chemicals or chemicals that are not clearly identified!
