Medical terminology Knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and root words is essential to learning and understanding medical terminology. medical dictionaries Physician’s Desk Reference (PDR) are good resources

Medical Terminology Look at the Word Parts: Prefixes- usually indicate location, time, or number and come at the beginning of a word Suffixes- usually indicate the procedure, disease, or condition and come after the root word Root Words- usually indicate the part of the body involved

Medical Terminology Cont. Combining Vowel: usually “o” attached to the root word makes terms easier to pronounce NOT used when suffix begins with a vowel IS used when suffix begins with a consonant Poly + Neur/o + Itis = (many) (nerves) (inflam) Ployneuritis (inflammation of many nerves)
