Although stem/progenitor cell technology holds great promise for lung regeneration, there is the risk that the cells, once transplanted, will go awry, resulting in disordered lung and, at worst, malignant transformation. One solution is to genetically modify the stem/progenitor cells with suicide genes that could be switched on, deleting the transplanted cells and their progeny.
