MOTIVATION
What is Motivation? Motive + Action=Motivation Motive-Inner Drive That Prompts Action Action-The Doing of Something Motive + Action=Motivation THE INNER DRIVE WHICH PROMPTS ONE TO DO/ACT
What MOTIVATES YOU?
MASLOW’S HEIRARCHY OF NEEDS
GOALS Please list 5 long term goals Please list 5 short term goals Think about an ideal day, write it down and be descriptive
What Would You Save? Pictures of family and friends accumulated 4 tickets for a cruise around the world $ 25,000 check Tickets for you and 5 friends to travel around US with your favorite musical band
If you picked: 1st Option-Think about what came to your mind when you made this choice 2nd Option-Who would you take with you 3rd Option-What would you do with the money 4th Option-Why did you pick this option as opposed to the 2nd
Motivating factors The previous exercise is a great way for you to identify what your motivating factors are Motivation must be constant just like showers You need to always remember what your goals are but most importantly you need to be aware of the reason behind the goals “Life can be pulled by goals just as surely as it can be pushed by drives” Viktor Frankl
balance Personal realm and professional realm need to be balanced How much family time? How much time with friends? How much time doing productive activities? Present and in the moment Do not let your mind wander Appreciate every moment spent in life
How much time do you spend Being productive in an 8 hour average day Saving Helping other people Internalizing Reading material that promotes growth Seeking guidance (spiritual, financial, emotional) With positive people who encourage and motivate you Respectful and accountable With people who have accomplished what you want so that you can seek counsel and direction
What would you cho0se? 3 million dollars, no penalties, taxes, no strings attached 1penny that would double in value every single day for 31 days
Most people pick 3million Penny Day 5: $0.16 Day 12: $5.12 Day 20: $5243 Day 29: $2.7Million Day 30: $5.3Million Day 31: $10,737,418.24
Opportunity Cost Every choice made is at the cost of something else You are offered a position right now for $10/hr but there is no room for growth You remain in school and upon graduation you have the potential of earning more than $10 in the long run
Instant Gratification vs. Delayed Gratification You are in school at the cost of something-time, money, potential income If you had decided to work now and not go to school, (Instant Gratification) it would be at the cost of an educational opportunity that would lead to career developments But you made the choice to remain in school for overall benefits in the long run (Delayed Gratification) Picking school now is similar to picking the penny
Faith VS. Fear Everyone is driven by faith and fear Faith is unwavering belief Fear is usually the fear of pain, or pain avoidance
Accomplishments We accomplish many things on a daily basis (Coming to work/school) We never give ourselves due credit; WHY? Lack of internalizing (spending time to figure goals, motivators, ‘hows’) By internalizing we have an idea of pending tasks; therefore when it happens, we know it Once you know you have accomplished something it is easy to give yourself a pat on the back Do not measure yourself with another person’s yardstick
perspective What is it and why is it so important? Perspectives influence how we view the world and the events in our lives Perspectives vary from person to person because it in turn is influenced by internal factors Although there are external factors which play a role in our perspectives, it is very important to limit the extent to which it does
Take a moment to think about: What makes you upset? What makes you happy? What makes you impatient? What makes you afraid?
These are some reasons that cause us grief It is not what happens to us that matters; it is how we respond to what happens that does These are some reasons that cause us grief When your car breaks down Or if you do not have a car If you are in a troubling relationship If you are having problems in school If your life is like a country song We can not control circumstances and prevent misfortune, but we can control our perspectives thus influencing our responses
When there is an understanding on how perspectives influence responses, we can ‘control’ our actions and limit them to the ones that will lead to the most beneficial outcomes Because if a situation is bad why do anything to make it worse? We become empowered The world is in your hands
‘Happy Vs. not so happy’ Every failure or adversity is a seed for greater success for those with a positive attitude and perspective It is not the problem but how we face the problem Be prepared for everything but ONLY expect the best Maintain a positive attitude and persevere Look at a problem as a way to gain another notch in your belt
Gratitude Count your blessings Be aware that as difficult as things may be it could be worse Do not waste precious time and energy on the issue when you could be focusing on a solution Focusing on negatives attract negatives Your mind is a powerful thing
Food for thought How good do you feel when you make your Family/Friends/Spouse/Children feel loved? Now imagine if you express love/genuine affection to everyone you come in contact with Multiply the effects that were felt from spreading love to people you know, because if you live everyday with the intent of treating others the way you want to be treated, you will see remarkable changes
conclusion What makes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa any different from you or I? Will, Perspective, Attitude, nothing that we are born with, but traits that we can learn, unlearn and relearn.
Thank You
