2 Samuel 9:1-13

2 Samuel 9:1-13 Mercy is showing kindness and compassion. Grace is not getting what we deserve. Mercy is getting what we do not deserve It is always extended to those who have no right to expect anything from us.

2 Samuel 9:1-13 A marvellous display of mercy! Mephibosheth. The grandson of King Saul and the son of Jonathan. A miserable man.

Mephibosheth a miserable man The victim of a lost inheritance He was disabled Mephibosheth = ‘Shameful thing’ He lived in fear of David Lo Debar = ‘No pasture’

David’s act of mercy David took the initiative. David acted on the basis of his covenant with Jonathan. David compelled Mephibosheth to come to him. David calmed Mephibosheth’s fears. David restored all that Mephibosheth had lost. David guaranteed a personal relationship between himself and Mephibosheth. Mephibosheth, realising his own miserable condition accepted David’s offer with humility and gratitude.

You and me? In this passage we are ….? Mephibosheth!

You and me? We can identify with Mephibosheth’s miserable condition. In our sin, we are the victims of a lost inheritance We lost the ability to save ourselves We feared the one person who could save us, God Yes, my name once was Mephibosheth from Lo Debar!

You and me? This is the glory of the Gospel. This is the uniqueness of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Like Mephibosheth, I have received mercy!

You and me? God took the initiative. All I had lost in Adam would be restored Mercy came because of a covenant I did not even know existed Calmed my fear of God Reassurance that I now had a reason to live I no longer need to fear the judgement of God God had a purpose for me, that was good I could now have a personal relationship with Him.

You and me? Through the Cross and resurrection of Jesus I have received more than Adam lost. I have been lifted out of my miserable, dreadful, shameful condition Elevated to heavenly places in Christ Jesus Adopted into God’s own family Enjoy fellowship with God Assured of eternal life with Him.
