Do Now Turn notebook to a new page, Create a new Unit Title: Unit 9: Nationalism and the First World War Then make a new notes title: What is a Nation?

What is a Nation? Create a definition with your group. Don’t google this one, I want to know what you think when you think “nation.” When you have your definition, send someone to the front to write that definition on the board.

What is a Nation? A Nation is a group of people that identify with each other over a set of shared common traits: Culture History Language Territory Ancestry Religion

What is a Nation? Country and Nation ARE NOT the same thing. Key Vocab: State: a political group under one government. Very similar to “country” in definition. Ex. China, America, Mexico, Germany, Puerto Rico. Sovereign State: a state that rules itself. Non-Sovereign: Scotland, Washington, etc.

What is a Nation? What many of us think of as “nations” are really Sovereign States. A Nation State is a country in which a nation lives under one state. Ex. Germany, Japan, France, Italy, Mexico

Other Vocabulary Multinational State: sometimes called an empire, a multi-nation state is a state which rules over several nations. Ex: Israel, United Kingdom, Russia Multi-State Nation: a nation that is divided between several states. Ex: Korea (north and south) , Chinese (with Taiwan)

Nation vs. Ethnic Group Nationality and ethnicity are also not the same. They are, however, very similar. For example, most people of the French Nation are also ethnically French. Nationality is more formal. It is about who you associate with as a political body. Ethnicity is more about your background—which biological group you descend from.

Ex. Mr Best Mr Best’s Nationality is American Mr Best’s Ethnicity is Scandinavian

How is a Nation Constructed? A nation is formed when a group of people recognize a shared connection or “bond” This is generally done by a combination of different bonds. Not every nation has the same bonds. Nation Culture History Language Territory Ancestry Religion

Cultural Bonds These are bonds in how people live or think. Nation Behavior Food Values Common Events Sports Clothing styles Music/Film Nation Culture History Language Territory Ancestry Religion

Historical Bonds These are bonds of a shared past. Nation Common experiences Mythologized past Stories Nation Culture History Language Territory Ancestry Religion

Linguistic Bonds Nations generally share a common language or dialect. Was ich gesagt habe ist: Ich will den ganzen Speck und die Eier, die du hast Linguistic Bonds Nations generally share a common language or dialect. Language spoken Dialectal phrases or pronunciations Nation Culture History Language Territory Ancestry Religion

Territorial Bonds Most nations have a “homeland” Not everyone who is of the nation has to be from that area NOR does everyone who live in that area belong to the nation. Nation Culture History Language Territory Ancestry Religion

Ancestral Bonds Belief in a common shared ancestry. May or may not be true. Most nations believe they are of one ethnicity. America, Canada, and China are exceptions Nation Culture History Language Territory Ancestry Religion

Religious Bonds Some nations also define themselves by a shared religion. Especially significant to: Southern Europe Middle East Jews Nation Culture History Language Territory Ancestry Religion

Assignment: Who are you? Answer a few questions: What do you consider your nationality? What do you consider your ethnicity? Are they the same? Why or why not? What are some of the bonds you share with your nation? Be specific Values or behaviors? Religion? Food? Ancestry or Ethnicity? Stories of the past? Clothing Styles? Territory? Music? Language? Common Experiences?
