Nixon and the United States The Nixon Presidency- Moon Landing, 1969 Kent State, 1970 Earth Day, 1970 Apollo 13 Mission and Crisis A Troubled Economy- Inflation is occurring and that is having a negative effect on the economy. Law and Order- The riots of 1968 lead to an increase on order. The Silent Majority put Nixon in power, showing the division of the era.

Watergate and Resignation The Election of 1972 Nixon was up for reelection in 1972, and to find information on Democrats he attempted to have individuals plant bugs in the DNC and look for files at the Watergate building. This would lead to a scandal within the administration. However, a bombshell was dropped when a presidential aide gave out information regarding bugs in the oval office to record every conversation. Chaos ensued when Nixon refused to give out the evidence. When Nixon tried to fire leaders who were against him, his own cabinet fell apart in the process of resignation. His approval rating went down the drain. He would later resign and Gerald Ford would take over.

Gerald Ford Gerald Ford assumed the presidency after the resignation of Richard Nixon. He pardoned Nixon in an attempt to put all of this behind them. Leaned conservative on many environmental, social welfare, and public interest measures OPEC Oil embargo and inflation would lead to consumer goods rising 23% in price. Federal Reserve tried to slow the inflation only to create a recession and unemployment up to 11%.

Jimmy Carter A Georgia Peanut Farmer, he emphasized status as an outsider to Washington Politics, he’d never lie, and represented a new Christian mindset. Domestic policy was weak, had to deal with another oil crisis in the 1970s, and turned down the heat in the White House to show he was sacrificing as much as everyone else. International Policy had two major events: Camp David Peace Accords between Egypt and Israel allowed for Palestinian migration to the West Bank and Gaza, promoting peace between the two countries. Iran Hostage Crisis- After the oppressive Shah left Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini would take power and have a fervent anti-American sentiment. Khomeini supporters would attack the US Embassy in Tehran and hold the employees hostage for 444 days. Carter would negotiate until Reagan’s inauguration in 1981.
