SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS Sedimentary rocks- formed from loose sediment (the broken fragments of other rocks). These sediments are transported, deposited and eventually Compacted and cemented together. This is called lithification.
Types of Sed. Rx Clastic rocks are composed of fragments, or clasts, of pre-existing rock.
Types of Sed. Rx Bioclastic rocks (also called organic) are composed of organic debris such as plants (lignite, coal) or shells (coquina, fossiliferous limestone).
Types of Sed. Rx Chemical rocks: made up from rock fragments that are chemical in origin and formed from minerals that were once dissolved in water.
Are all Sed. Rocks distinguishable in only one of the groups (Clastic, Organic, Chemical)??
Sedimentary Rock Features Stratification/Strata - is the building up of layers
Sedimentary Rock Features Mud Cracks - cracks formed by the drying, of the mud
Sedimentary Rock Features Ripple Marks - wavy feature formed by wind, wave, or current.
Sedimentary Rock Features Fossils - Organic organisms fossilized/cemented into rock layer.
