Precambrian Time This began about 4.6 billion years ago. *Prokaryotes form. Cyanobacteria begin photosynthesis and produce oxygen. *The ozone layer develops. Cells with nuclei form.

Paleozoic Era This began about 542 million years ago. * Plants become established on land. Crawling insects appear on land. * Winged insects appear. Organisms suffer largest mass extinction known.

Mesozoic Era This began about 251 million years ago. *Many reptile species evolve. *Dinosaurs dominate the Earth. First birds appear. Small mammals survive mass extinction.

Cenozoic Era This began about 65.5 million years ago. Large mammals appear *Humans appear.
