Embedded Assessment #1 page 4 and pages 51-52 Your assignment is to write a multi- paragraph essay that defines your interpretation of what it means to be an American. This essay should use the strategies of definition and different perspectives from the unit help you develop a complex and thoughtful definition. If possible, incorporate an iconic image into your essay. Identify the key nouns and verbs in EA1 and the Exemplary column of the rubric. Unpacked EA 1 Use the writing process to produce a polished and engaging multi-paragraph essay on what it means to be an American. Synthesize different perspectives from a variety of texts as well as personal experience. Construct a clear, focused thesis statement that expresses complex elements of an original definition. Support the thesis with a variety of definition strategies, including quotes, paraphrased, and summarized evidence. Sequence ideas to build a clear and convincing definition, using meaningful transitions to link ideas and create coherence. Use specific, varied diction and a variety of sentence patterns. Follow conventions of standard English. Have students take notes over this slide. Encourage them to put into their own words. This goes in the notes section of the binder.
