STAGIS Shark TAGging Information System Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop 27 June 2011 Noumea, New Caledonia STAGIS Shark TAGging Information System Lea Protoy Oceanic Fisheries Programme (OFP) Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC)

What’s shark tagging ? To attach tag on sharks for tracking them Different types of tag (conventional, electronic, satellite) Different attachment methods (feeding, implantation in the dorsal fin, surgery…) Tagging studies permit to: Identify spatial or temporal patterns in habitat use Examine post-release mortality Validate growth rate and natural mortality Verify distribution, migrations and stock estimates Provide essential information for shark species stock assessments Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

Project context WCPFC Shark Research Plan (SRP) to provide a scientific basis for evaluating stock status to assist the Commission in meeting its responsibilities for ensuring the sustainability of shark stocks to inform future discussion by the Commission on the need for further management measures for sharks Coordinated review of all Pacific shark tagging data To create a ‘meta’database about shark tagging research to understand the extent and usefulness of existing information to identify the need for further work in shark tagging research Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

Objectives Taking stock of shark tagging research in Pacific Ocean Number of studies Shark species studied Number of individuals tagged Type of tag used Oceanic regions studied Applications To create a free access database To access the most relevant existing data for shark assessments to identify priorities for future shark tagging research Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

Data-Sourcing Shark scientific community assistance Publications in shark research newsletters Individual mailing request to shark researchers (90 persons) Meetings with shark researchers if possible (2 persons) Bibliographic research Research on web, reviews, books,… More than one hundred of papers read and analyzed 90 references of interest selected for our project Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

Data-Sourcing results Origin of data 45% from researcher’s response 55% from bibliographic research Content of the database ~ 200 studies ~ 60 shark species ~ 80,700 tagged sharks From all over Pacific Ocean Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

Access Database Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

STAGIS STAGIS MySQL database Publication on web Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

Before demonstration, Some statistics… Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

Geographic distribution Shark tagging research more active in developed countries (Australia, NZ, USA, Japan = 80% of studies) Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

Species distribution 36% 23% 14% In terms of number of tagged sharks In terms of number of studies 23% Shortfin Mako 36% Blue Shark 14% White Shark Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011

Type of tag and satellite (35%) Different types of tag Essentially conventional (36%) Easier deployment cheap and satellite (35%) very useful to identify migratory patterns Data transmitted by satellite, not necessary to retrieve the tag Ecosystem and Bycatch Workshop - Lea Protoy – OFP-SPC – June 2011
