Lesson Overview Activity Lesson Learning Outcome Students will create a photo collage to show places in their school that are special to them. Prior Knowledge Students can draw on their knowledge of the previous content lesson which focused on the concept of what a special place is. Students will also draw on their knowledge of how to use a digital camera which was explicitly taught in the foundation unit. Resources Required Digital cameras – ideally one between two Student Handout 22.1 – printed A3 size Teacher Dialogue Resource Special Instructions This lesson needs to be implemented over two teaching sessions to allow time for the students’ photos to be printed. The concept development will revisit and revise aspects of what a special place is. Closure of the lesson will not occur until the end of the second teaching session when the collages are complete and ready to be presented during a sharing time. Possible Ancestral Language Connection (ALC) Links This is an opportunity to invite members of the community or Elders to assist the students to use the digital cameras to take photos of their special places. One of my special places Concept Development Schools are safe and happy places where time can be enjoyed in special places. There are some places in my school that are special to me. When I’m in these places I feel safe and happy. One of my special places This is the garden seat that is at the front of our school. I like to sit here with my best friend each morning and talk about what our day will be like. Activity Lesson 6

Concept Development Activity Lesson Schools are safe and happy places where time can be enjoyed in special places. I have places that I like to go to with my friends and I also have places that I like to go to on my own. Another special place This is the reading mat in our classroom. Some of my favourite books are on this shelf. I love to go here by myself and read when I get the chance. Activity Lesson 7

Concept Development Activity Lesson Schools are safe and happy places where time can be enjoyed in special places. A special place can be just about anywhere. I doesn’t have to have lots of things in it. Schools are big places. There are lots of spaces that can be special to people for all different reasons. Another special place This is the rock that I sit on after school to wait for my big brother. While I am sitting here I say goodbye to the other kids from my school as they go home. Sometimes my teachers come and chat to me while I’m sitting here. Activity Lesson 8

Guided Practice Activity Lesson Schools are safe and happy places where time can be enjoyed in special places. Let’s follow these steps to create a collage of our special places at school. Step 1: Revise the parts of the camera and practice zooming in and out on some objects. Step 2: Take turns with your partner to take a photo of something or someone in your classroom. Relevance Schools are safe and happy places where time can be enjoyed in special places. It is important to discover places in your school that are special to you. Going to these places should make you feel happy and safe. People have different places that they like to go to for different reasons. Just like the special places we have outside of school, all parts of our school should be looked after and respected – it could be someone’s special place. 12
