10-22 Analyze the picture below. Identify what type of weathering occurred, and tell me what evidence you have to support your claim.
What happens to the sediment after weathering?
Erosion
Erosion- the transportation of sediment. (carrying away of sediment) Agents of erosion include wind, water and ice. Striations-lines left behind showing evidence of movement.
Water Erosion Heavy Rainfall/flooding
Waves moving sand
Wind Erosion Dust storms in dry/arid climates
Ice Erosion Glaciers carry away sediment as they move
Problems Caused by Erosion Soil Erosion- When agriculture fields replace natural vegetation, topsoil is exposed and can dry out. The diversity and quantity of microorganisms that help to keep the soil fertile can decrease, and nutrients may wash out. Soil can be blown away by the winds or washed away by rains. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5XznHQigiE
Beach Erosion- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that between 80 and 90 percent of the sandy beaches along America’s coastlines have been eroding for decades. In many of these cases, individual beaches may be losing only a few inches per year, but in some cases the problem is much worse. The outer coast of Louisiana is losing some 50 feet of beach every year. -Stephen Leatherman, National Healthy Beaches Campaign https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw6sDulj7GA
So, What can we do? You can’t stop erosion, but we have found ways to slow it down. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpltrgkLqWc
Ways to slow down Soil Erosion Using chemicals that help hold the soil together.
Improving drainage, diverting water away from problem areas.
Using geotextile fabrics to help hold soil in place.
Building retaining walls or terraces
Planting plants on a hillside, the roots hold the soil in place.
Slowing Beach Erosion Jetties/Groins
