Apply the Distance and Midpoint Formulas Section 11.5

Objectives: Apply the distance and midpoint formula

Key Vocabulary: Distance formula Midpoint Midpoint formula

The Distance Formula

Example 1: Find the distance between (-1, 3) and (5, 2).

Example 2: The distance between (3, -5) and (7, b) is 5 units. Find the value of b.

#1: Find the distance between the points. (3, 0), (3, 6)

#2: Find the distance between the points. (-2, 1), (2, 5)

#3: Find the distance between the points. (6, -2), (-4, 7)

#4: Find the value of a. The distance between (1, a) and (4, 2) is 3 units.

The Midpoint Formula

Example 3:

Example 4: You and a friend are sightseeing in Washington, D.C. You are at the National Gallery of Art, and your friend is at the Washington Monument, as shown on the map. You want to meet at the landmark that is closes to the midpoint of your locations. At which landmark should you meet?
