Learning Targets I can describe how housing reflects cultural views and values. I can point out ways in which cultures influence each other. I can identify social trends that affect housing. I can explain the major ways in which government influences housing.

Entertaining Homes People are beginning to spend more and more time at home, and entertainment is an increasing function of the home.

Population Trends Demographics- the statistical characteristics of a population. The fact that people are now living longer has created special housing needs.

Population Trends Baby Boomers- form the largest group of Americans, they are people born in the 20 year period immediately following World War II.

The Government’s Role Provide a legal system for the buying and selling of property Impose taxes on homeowners to pay for community services Involved in funding new housing.

State and Local Governments In the earliest North American settlements, few regulations existed. Towns simply expanded as more people needed homes. Laws did not restrict where houses could be built.

Today… State and community officials take a much more active role in controlling development by adopting comprehensive plans for future growth.

Public Housing The U.S. government works with local housing agencies to help provide housing for those in need. Large buildings with many apartments. Residents usually pay a set percentage of their income for rent.

Americans with Disabilities Act Established in 1990. ADA has improved access for individuals with disabilities so that they can participate in community life without unnecessary barriers.
