REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGY

JOURNAL QUESTION: When you see the word “Reproductive Technology,” what image comes to mind? OR… What are all of the different “Reproductive Technologies” that you can think of? What do you know about each one?

REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION AIH AID IVF SURROGATE MOTHERHOOD GIFT

ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION This process takes sperm from a man (through sperm donation) and mechanically introduces it into a woman’s reproductive tract AIH The sperm comes from the husband AID The sperm comes from a donor COST: $400-$500/each time SUCCESS RATE: 5-20% CLIP

IN VITRO FERTILIZATION Woman takes a fertility drug to produce multiple eggs at the same time Eggs are removed from the ovary and placed into a petri dish Sperm is taken from a donor and joined with the eggs in the petri dish After 2-3 days in the dish, the embryo is transferred into the mother’s womb COST: $10,000-$14,000/cyle SUCCESS RATE: 35% CLIP

SURROGATE MOTHERHOOD A “surrogate mother” is a woman who agrees to carry a child to term that is not her own child IVF Surrogacy The embryo is conceived through IVF and then implanted into another woman “Natural” Surrogacy The surrogate mother is artificially inseminated but it is HER OWN egg COST: $68,000-$90,000 SUCCESS RATE: 40-50% CLIP

Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer An egg is taken from a woman’s ovary Sperm is taken from the man The egg and sperm are placed in a tiny tube, separated by an air bubble The contents of this tube are injected into the Fallopian Tube The hope is that the sperm and the egg will meet and conception will occur COST: $15,000-$20,000 SUCCESS RATE: 21% CLIP
