The Scientific Method

Scientific Method or Process Scientists use a method or process to conduct experiments. Why do scientists (and others) conduct experiments? To learn more about the world around us!

Steps in the Scientific Method There are 6 steps in the process. Ask a question. Make a hypothesis. Conduct an experiment. Observe what happens. Record data. Come up with a conclusion.

using what you know in your head to make an educated guess hypothesis (v) using what you know in your head to make an educated guess syn: prediction

things in an experiment that can be changed variable (n) things in an experiment that can be changed

observe (v) noticing when things occur in an experiment You can use your senses to ___________.

infer (v) read between the lines using what you know in your head with what you learned in the experiment

things that stay the same in an experiment control (n) things that stay the same in an experiment

data (n) the information collected during an experiment includes graphs, charts, numbers

conclusion (n) what you learn from an experiment summarizing the results of an experiment

classify (v) to group by a set of rules
