Flashcards & Fast Facts HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS Flashcards & Fast Facts

The basic building blocks of life Cells

This system is responsible for breaking down your food so that the other systems can use its nutrients digestive major organs: stomach, small intestines, large intestines

Digestive System * The small intestine is 20 feet long when it is stretched out!!! * Breaks down the food that we eat and turns it into energy

This system gives shape and strength to the rest of the body and helps it move around muscular major organs: biceps, triceps, pectorals

Muscular System  Gives shape and strength to the rest of the body and helps it move around  Works closely with the skeletal system  We have 650 muscles in our body!!

This system sends messages to the rest of the body and controls the body’s activities nervous major organs: brain, spinal cord, nerves

Nervous System  Sends messages to the rest of the body and controls the body’s activities  The spinal cord is protected by the spine.

This system transports nutrients, oxygen, and other materials to the entire body circulatory major organs: heart, veins, arteries, blood

Circulatory System  Works closely with the respiratory system

excretory This system helps the body get rid of waste products major organs: kidneys, urethra, ureters, bladder

* Helps the body get rid of waste * You can live with only 1 kidney!!! Excretory System * Helps the body get rid of waste * You can live with only 1 kidney!!!

This system gives shape to the body and protects the inner organs skeletal major organs: skull, rib cage, femur (bones)

Skeletal System  Gives shape to the body and protects other major organs  Works closely with the muscular system  The femur connects the hip bone to the knee.  An adult has 206 bones. Babies have over 300!

This system supplies oxygen to the cells and removes carbon dioxide from the blood respiratory major organs: lungs, trachea, bronchia, alveoli, diaphragm

Respiratory System * Supplies oxygen to the cells and removes carbon dioxide from the blood * Works closely with the circulatory system

Which system works with the muscular system? skeletal

Which system works closely with the circulatory system? Respiratory
