Polynomials and Polynomial Functions Section 5.2 Polynomials and Polynomial Functions
VOCAB! 1. A polynomial of one term is a Monomial. 2. A polynomial of two terms is a Binomial. 3. A polynomial of three terms is a Trinomial. 4. The Degree of a term is the sum of the exponents of all variables in the term. 5. The Degree of the polynomial is the greatest degree of any of the terms.
Write in descending order, state the degree and ‘name’ of each. 1. 5r4 – 3r5 + 8r 2 . -16m4n – m2n + ½ m2 3 . 4
Addition / Subtraction To ADD: combine like terms. (Recall, like terms must have the same variable and exponent.) To SUBTRACT: distribute the negative to the second polynomial, then combine like terms.
Add or Subtract. 1. (4x3 – 3x + 4) – (6x3 – 3x2 + 5) 2. (5n4 + 9n3 – n2- 3) + (6n3 – 4n2 + 2n - 6) 3. (-5w3 – 2w+ 4) – (6w3 + 3w + 5) 4. (4y2 – 8y + 1) + (5y2 + 3y - 5) – (2y – 5)
