Biblioteca Digital del Caribe Bibliothèque Numérique des Caraïbes <http://www.dloc.com> Digital Library of the Caribbean Introduction: The Caribbean comprises a diverse mix of cultures, histories and peoples that share a common region. The Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) examines these similarities and differences by providing an umbrella for digital projects and collections from and about the Caribbean that might otherwise exist in isolation at an individual institution. dLOC provides a critical mass of resources in a single space, allowing the searching across collections. Objectives: Increase access to Caribbean research resources by digitizing collections of note and making them available through a tri-lingual interface; 2. Build capacity by developing a comprehensive digitization training program for Caribbean partners; 3. Advance Caribbean Studies by building an engaging outreach program that delivers these collections to scholars, the classroom, and the general public; 4. Cultivate new research initiatives among Caribbean scholars by providing a supportive framework to disseminate this work; 5. Ensure sustainability of dLOC by consolidating the organizational framework, both in governance and technical infrastructure. User Interface: Basic and Advanced searches provide results in table, brief and thumbnail views. All images are zoomable, using navigation tools and thumbnails. Workflow Design and Process: Citation and metadata provide bibliographic control. 1) Foreign Partner Production dLOC encourages institutional branding. Membership requirements: Availability of collections with Caribbean content; Willingness to contribute collections and to make these freely available to the project; Willingness to designate representative(s) to manage local participation; and Willingness to comply with common standards, for digitization, bibliographic management, and copyright. Partners in the project may either: a) contribute digital content to a central repository, or b) make their digital collections available to dLOC through compliance with OAI-PMH. Contact <dloc@fiu.edu> for more information. Quality Control of image / metadata. Metadata creation with dLOC Toolkit. Item selected for digitization. Scanned on-site.
