Mind’s On: Let’s Make a Deal Get a partner and a piece of paper Establish an issue/topic where you might conceivably have to make an arrangement with the other person (eg. Sharing lunch, lending money, etc.) You have 5 minutes to write down an agreement

Remembering NZ! What are a few things we remember about NZ? (Check Maori Culture and History note) Guess 2-3 reasons why the Maori would want to enter a treaty in mid-1800’s.

Comparing Treaties: The Treaty of Waitangi

Why Would the Maori Sign the Treaty? They wanted help to stop British people who were living in NZ causing trouble Chiefs would still have control over their tribes The Missionaries recommended it, for Maori’s own good It would preserve the trade between themselves and the British Britain was a major world power, so having their protection would be good for Maori The Treaty would bring permanent peace to the country Maori wanted to stop bad land deals. Some had been cheated out of land by greedy British traders

Why Would the British Want a Treaty? Reason #1: British Numbers in NZ Were Increasing By 1840 there were about 2000 Europeans living in New Zealand with many more wanting to move there There were no law courts or police to stop them committing crimes

Reason #2: The Missionaries Asked for Help The church asked the British to be more involved in NZ as they believed the Maori would be better protected

Reason #3 – “Mana” Mana is the power/authority of chiefs who maintained control of regions The British sought the consent of these chiefs instead of simply imposing colonization The goal was for colonizers to eventually have the mana

Primary Source Analysis – Looking at the Treaty Read your assigned part of the Treaty of Waitangi In your notes, write down the Purpose of this part of the Treaty and how it might be problematic for the Maori (use the notes on the right) Get into a group of with all parts and discuss the Treaty as a whole

What Really Happened… Video Clip

The Main Problems The translator was not an expert in the Maori language The Maori version is not an accurate translation of the English version Most Maori signed the Maori version, meaning that should be the one accepted Not all important chiefs signed the treaty – some simply refused to sign Some chiefs were never even asked to sign. Ones that did were given gifts. The treaty was taken around the country for chiefs to sign, but didn’t make it everywhere and the terms were not a matter of discussion
