The energy of the wave moves toward the shore but the wave itself remains in place. As the wave passes the floating object, the object moves forward then bobs back to nearly the same spot

Example of Wave Motion

The wave breaks onto the shore forming surf. In deep water, the wave is a swell. As a wave approaches the shore and the ocean floor gets steeper, the wave height increases. When the wave reaches a certain height, it breaks on the shore. Cause: as the waves approach the shore, the water becomes shallower. Friction between the ocean floor and shallow water causes the water to slow down. As speed decreases, the shape changes. The wave breaks onto the shore forming surf.
