Henri Poincar’e By: Jasmine Williams

Birth date: April 29th 1854 -July 17th 1912 Birthplace: Nancy, France Works & Achievements: He was known for his discovery of Topology and Qualitative Dynamics. Some of his other notable works are the theories of Special Relativity and Aanalytical Functions. Worked as: Theoretical physicist, Engineer, and a Philosopher of Science. Institutions of Study: Corps des mines University of Caen Lower Normandy University of Paris Bureau des Longitudes

Contributions Poincare made contributions to the world of mathematics and science in the form of Algebraic topology, the theory of relativity, the recurrence theorem, the three-body problem, differential equation and etc. Poincare became the first person to discover a chaotic deterministic system which laid the foundations of modern chaos theory Poincare also helped in the International Time Zone Project Topology :is the mathematical study of shapes and spaces http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUoaTrQTM5o In geometry one is usually interested in terms like distance, angle, area and volume. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/Mug_and_Torus_morph.gif He Discovered topology and used this new mathematical tool to answer a very important question, Is the solar system stable? In 19th century, King Oscar II of Sweden, Re- posted this question with a cash prize to whomever answered it. Poincare won the prize with his Discovery "On The Problem of Three Bodies and the Equations of Equilibrium". But Poincare understood that infinitely complicated behaviors could arise in simple nonlinear systems. He was able to describe many of the basic properties of deterministic chaos.

Henri Poincare study Chaos Theory on the problem of the motion of three objects in mutual gravitational attraction, which was known as called three-body problem. Poincare found that there can be orbits which are no periodic, and yet not forever increasing nor approaching a fixed point. Chaos Theory A Dynamic system: is called Chaotic when a very small variation to its initial, state produces macroscopive differences in the final result. Poincare try to determine weather the center of gravity still moves with a uniform velocity when electromagnetic fields are included. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pKrKdNclYs&list=PL46E62C4367D696A9 Chaos theory: is a field of study in mathematics, with applications in several disciplines including meteorology, physics, engineering, economics and biology
