Florida Becomes a State In 1837 over half of Florida’s population was made up of slaves The voters wanted Statehood and drafted a Constitution in 1839 Congress was concerned with the number of Slave and Free states Florida could not enter as a slave state until March 3, 1845 Iowa enters the union as a free state the following year to balance the power in Congress
