One step equation with Multiplication and Division

Introduction What is an equation? An equation is a mathematical statement that shows 2 quantities are equal. An equation contains an equal sign. 12 – 3 = 9 Numerical 3a = 30 Algebraic

Steps for Solving One-Step Equations 1) Get the variable on one side of the equation. 2) You always perform the same operation to both sides of an equation. 3) To undo an operation you perform its opposite operation to both sides of the equation.

Opposite operations The opposite of add is SUBTRACT The opposite of subtract is ADD The opposite of multiply is DIVIDE The opposite of divide is MULTIPLY

Solving Equations Using Multiplication or Division Rule 3: If a variable has been multiplied by a nonzero number, divide both sides by that number. Rule 4: If a variable has been divided by a number, multiply both sides by that number.

multiplied by 4, so divide Example 1: Solve 4n = 20 Solution: Equals 4n = 20 RHS LHS Variable/ Unknown 4 x n = 20 Hint : 4n = 4 x n Constants Get the variable on one side of the equation. We keep variable n on the Left Handside(LHS) and move constant to the Right Handside(RHS) = By rule 4, a variable is multiplied by 4, so divide both sides by 4 n = 5 Ans: n = 5

By multiplication rule of integers, Example 2: Solve Solution: Equals = 4 RHS LHS Variable/ Unknown = 4 Constants Get the variable on one side of the equation. We keep variable f on the Left Handside(LHS) and move constant to the Right Handside(RHS) By rule 3, a variable is divided by 9, so multiply both sides by 9 = 4 x -9 By multiplication rule of integers, - x + = - f = 4 x -9 = -36 Ans: f = -36

7m = -49 7 x m = -49 = m = -7 LHS Example 3: Solve 7m = -49 Solution: Equals 7m = -49 RHS LHS Variable/ Unknown 7 x m = -49 Hint : 7m = 7 x m Constants Get the variable on one side of the equation. We keep variable m on the Left Handside(LHS) and move constant to the Right Handside(RHS) By Division rule of integers, - ÷ + = - By rule 4, a variable is multiplied by 7 so divide both sides by 7 = m = -7 Ans: m = -7

= 5 = 5 = 5 x 2 n = 5 x 2 = 10 LHS Example 4: Solve Solution: Equals RHS LHS Variable/ Unknown = 5 Constants Get the variable on one side of the equation. We keep variable n on the Left Handside(LHS) and move constant to the Right Handside(RHS) = 5 x 2 By rule3, a variable is divided by 2, so multiply both sides by 2 n = 5 x 2 = 10 Ans: n = 10

Try these 8m = 96 12h = -24
