What is “internationalization”?

What Is Internationalization? Higher education’s engagement with that reality. Globalization The movement of people, ideas, goods, capital, services, pollution, and diseases across borders. Barbara Hill, 2013

CIGE Model for Comprehensive Internationalization A strategic, coordinated process that seeks to align and integrate international policies, programs, and initiatives, and positions colleges and universities as more globally oriented and internationally connected.

From UMB “Deepen and expand local and global engagement by providing health, legal, and social work programs, and engaging in research to promote social justice and improve health.” “A focused leveraging of institutional expertise and knowledge to tackle systemic problems impacting local and global communities.” “Providing professional and scientific expertise to the greater community at the local, state, national and international level.” “We advance the health of the public by investigating the causes, treatments and prevention of human health problems.”

The ACE Internationalization Laboratory An invitational learning community that assists participating institutions in developing capacity, capability, and strategy for comprehensive internationalization. Involvement lasts 16-20 months. Each cohort is 10-12 institutions. 138 institutions (including you!) have participated. U.S. and international All sectors

Winter-Summer 2019: The Internationalization Review A process for EACH SCHOOL for … Taking stock of current international and global initiatives. Collecting and analyzing information as a basis for the internationalization report. Identifying strengths, weaknesses, gaps and possibilities for new strategic activities. Engaging people across the institution in a discussion of internationalization.

Summer-Fall 2019: The Internationalization Report Variations: Report on findings of the internationalization review Report on findings AND recommendations for action Report on findings, recommended actions, AND an implementation plan (activities, schedule, timeline, resources)

Spring 2020: Wrapping Up Peer review visit ACE Advisor + 2 peer reviewers Includes review of draft campus report Mutual learning experience ACE report to president, provost, committee chairs Implementation & on-going relationship Lab 2.0
