January 9th, 2018 I can illustrate a Bohr Diagram of the 1st 20 elements on the Periodic Table. SQRS: A chemical equation is shown below. C6H1206 + 602 6C02 + 6H20 What are the products of the reaction? A. H20 and 02 B. C6H1206 and C02 C. C02 and H20 D. 02 and C6H1206 Answer: C. Remember the left side are the reactants (they are reacting with each other to produce the products on the right side of the equation.

Quick Review of an atom In the center of an atom is the ______________. nucleus This nucleus represents most of an atom’s mass. The nucleus contains the atom’s protons & neutrons. The rest of the atom is mostly empty space. The electrons travel in an area of space around the nucleus called the ________________ ___________. electron cloud It is impossible to determine the exact location of any electron. Instead we “predict” where it will most likely be.

Electrons closer to the nucleus have lowest amount of energy Electrons farthest from the nucleus have the highest amount of energy and are the easiest to remove.

The first energy level can hold _______ electrons. Electron Structure Each element has a unique structure of a specific # of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The # of electrons are responsible for many of the physical & chemical properties of that element. All the electrons travel in the electron cloud, but some are closer to the nucleus than others. The different areas for an electron in an atom are called __________ _________. energy levels The first energy level can hold _______ electrons. 1 or 2 The 2nd and 3rd energy levels can hold up to ____ electrons. 8

Let’s learn how to draw Bohr Diagrams In 1913 Danish scientist Niels Bohr modeled an atom containing a nucleus with protons & neutrons with the electrons orbiting the nucleus in the electron cloud.

9 + 10 0 Let’s draw a Bohr Diagram for F. F - Fluorine 9 Protons + charge 10 Neutrons 0 charge F - Fluorine 1st step: Label diagram with element symbol/name. 2nd step: Determine how many protons & neutrons it has and write this in the nucleus. 9 + 10 0 3rd step: Determine how many electrons it has. Since protons = electrons it has 9 electrons. 4th step: Check yourself. Since F is in Group 7A it should have 7 valence electrons (outer shell electrons). Do we? Yes we do!

18 + 22 0 Let’s draw one for Ar. Ar = Argon 18 Protons + charge 22 Neutrons 0 charge Ar = Argon 1st step: Label diagram with element symbol/name. 2nd step: Determine how many protons & neutrons it has and write this in the nucleus. 18 + 22 0 3rd step: Determine how many electrons it has. Since protons = electrons it has 18 electrons. 4th step: Check yourself. Since Ar is in Group 8A it should have 8 valence electrons (outer shell electrons). Do we?

On your atom, draw the Bohr Diagram for the element Nitrogen. Your Turn. On your atom, draw the Bohr Diagram for the element Nitrogen. Check yourself—how many valence electrons does Nitrogen have? 7 + 7 0 Do you have that many?

Your Turn…
