Purpose The ability to display your data visually is extremely important in science research. Selecting and constructing the appropriate graph is the key to understanding your data well.

General Rules for making Graphs Must use graph paper, using lined paper is not appropriate for drawing a graph Independent variable is placed on the x-axis Dependent variable is placed on the y-axis

X and Y axis

Guidelines for choosing a scale on the x and y axis Scales should be easy to use; divisions in 1, 2, 5, 10 etc depending on the size of the scale Divisions must be equal increments across the whole axis, for both X and Y axes Scales must use most of the space on the graph Scales do not have to be the same on the x and y axis Scales do not always have to start at zero

Paraphrase Write down at least two key points from rules on making graphs Summarize the key points in your own words! 6. Paraphrase student writes down one or two main ideas directly from the text or notes student now paraphrases these ideas in their own words teacher provides feedback 6

Line graph Show changes in the quantity of a chosen variable and emphasize the rise and fall of the values over the range Represents continuous data – numerical scale on both the y and x axis.

Construction of a Line graph Plot the data as separate points with symbols Do not connect the points, rather fit a smooth curve or line that best represents the points If more than one curve on the graph, include a key to distinguish between the two curves Title must include experimental group and dependent variable

Characteristics of Bar Graphs X- axis represents discontinuous groups or non-numerical data Y axis has a numerical scale
