Competition in animals L.O. What is competition? What makes an animal a good competitor?

In any area there will a limited amount of food Different species and even individuals of the same species must compete with one another

WHAT DO ANIMALS COMPETE FOR? WATER TERRITORY MATES

COMPETITION FOR FOOD HERBIVORES: plant eaters - some eat many types and some are very picky Ex: panda bears - they only eat bamboo shoots!

COMPETITION FOR FOOD CARNIVORES: meat eaters Usually, many different carnivores will compete for the same prey Animals which are the best adapted, will be the most successful! They also have to compete with members of their own species

Adaptations of predators Running fast http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KIeXEiJuJUY Keen eyesight Optimal hearing

PREY ANIMALS GIVE ONE ADAPTATION WHICH WOULD BE USEFUL TO A PLANT EATER AND ONE WHICH WOULD BE USEFUL TO A CARNIVORE

COMPETITION FOR MATES For many animals, its the male who puts effort into attracting a female. Fighting Large displays – feathers, colours, dances http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=P85LoHftEKs

WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL COMPETITOR? Better at finding food or a mate than the rest of its species Better at finding food or water thn species it’s competing with Must breed successfully (make good, healthy babies)
