AASL Library Standards AkLA Conference 2018

Welcome: https://bit.ly/2Dj5hdQ Please pick up or download a copy of the standards and add your two cents. Mark the following things in the margins (annotate text). ! = interesting idea :) = endorse the idea { } = challenge the idea ? = question about the idea ∞ = connection to the idea

Introductions Deborah Rinio Librarian, Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Katie Conover Clark Librarian, Mat-Su Borough School District Julie Doepken Librarian, Kenai Peninsula Borough School District

double track agenda Learn about the new AASL Standards Try out some teaching strategies and class management tools annotate text hogs, logs and cogs quick write (aka Jot Thoughts) Padlet Jigsaw Think-pair-share card sort

Annotate text Mark the following things in the margins (annotate text). ! = interesting idea :) = endorse the idea { } = challenge the idea ? = question about the idea ∞ = connection to the idea There are several ways to annotate text, this is a quick way to mark-up and make notes to follow up with later.

Share your annotations Pick three things to share with a shoulder partner or table group. Pick three places you annotated in your learner standards (question, interesting idea, challenge, etc) and share with a shoulder partner. (if time permits, share out one with whole table group, round robin style). no hogs no logs be a cog

What is already working? Use the Padlet to reflect on ways you’re already rocking the library standards. https://bit.ly/2D5HRs Write down as many ideas as you can of things you’re doing in each foundation. If you can’t think of anything you’re already doing, write what you’d like to try. Padlet has shared foundations in columns with the key commitments under each foundation. The idea is people would post ideas for each one and these ideas are then available for everyone to access and share later.

Shared Foundations Jigsaw Activity 1 min: Read your set of shared foundations infographics. Find a group that read the same shared foundations 5 min: Discuss What is familiar? What is new to you? What do you value? 5 min: Find a group that includes all the shared foundations (IICCEE) and summarize your previous group’s discussion.

Inquire curiosity personal connection reflective learning ask questions make meaning new knowledge

inquire = curiosity

“I notice, I wonder” How can we support students curiosity? How can we help kids get started? Some kids are paralyzed by “what do you want to know about _______?” Use the “I notice, I wonder” table to record what they see, and create questions

I notice… I wonder... I notice the nose looks like an elephant. I notice it has wings. I wonder if this photo is real. I wonder what colibri gigantea means. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hx_hapCmSOrz3hc5tPwD-U5bYeRdTdIqyE2XYOFwWWk/edit?usp=sharing http://www.freakingnews.com/elephant-bird-Pictures-11862.asp

inquire https://wonderopolis.org/

Include Pick a card from your table. Find the learner standard. Turn to your shoulder partner and describe your standard in your own words. (for example: “Include A. Think 1.” Would be standard: 1. Articulating an awareness of the contributions of a ranger or learners.) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1utxFtjAipRJLMtlCFFcVRw 47-zqYP7mSs_nK4tJsc0w/edit?usp=sharing (cards)

include Include Think 3. How to find your standard

Include- inclusiveness, respect for diversity Think of a teaching strategy your standard for each category: no tech low tech high tech Which strategy is most inclusive and supports your diverse community of learners? For example, for articulating an awareness of the contributions of a ranger of learners- no tech: poster project with sticky note comments,

include no tech low tech high tech Poster project where students can leave comments on sticky notes recognizing the work of their peers. Guide students to provide feedback that complimentary and constructive. Add comments to a shared Google slide presentation. Use Flipgrid to provide feedback on student infographics created with Piktochart.

Collaborate & Curate Card Sort Activity Find a group of four (each person with a different color) Develop a brief curation plan using your persona, platform, grade level, and discipline to flesh out the scenario provided by your cards Write your curation plan on chart paper Add the relevant standards (e.g., IIBi) Share Your Work! http://bit.ly/2HqQ0dn

each other’s great ideas and then share one ah-ha with your neighbor. Gallery “Walk” Take a look at each other’s great ideas and then share one ah-ha with your neighbor.

Explore Key Commitment Discover and innovate in a Growth mindset developed through experience and reflection.

Explore

Explore Some Best Practices (from the Standards book) Make sure your learners have enough time to share ideas and things that they are curious about. Make sure your space has seating and materials that will spark learner’s interest Give learners a voice--to share their opinions, give suggestions for resources, or share their creative projects. After listening to the kids in the video, think of how your library space encourages students to EXPLORE?

Explore How are you already doing this in your library? Stand Up, Hands Up, Pair Up How are you already doing this in your library? What things what you might begin doing in your library? After listening to the kids in the video, think of how your library space encourages students to EXPLORE?

Engage Key Commitment Demonstrate safe, legal, and ethical creating and sharing of knowledge products indepedently while engaging in a community of practice and an interconnected world.

Engage

Engage Some Best Practices (from the Standards Book) Ensure learners at all levels understand what is acceptable, ethical behavior when using information. Invite others to be involved in your collection development process, to give input on materials. Encourage learners to choose the technology tools that best reflect their personal learning style.

Engage How are you already doing this in your library? Stand Up, Hands Up, Pair Up How are you already doing this in your library? What things what you might begin doing in your library? Again, think about how you are doing this in your library.

1 question you still have What’s next? 5 ideas you loved! 3 things you want to try 1 question you still have

Action Plan Pair up with someone who teaches in the same grade level. Think-Pair-Share: What is your action plan? What one thing will you do next? How will you do it?
