LO: To understand what Philosophy is and analyse different types of truth What is Philosophy? “Philosophy comes from the Greek word meaning ‘the love of knowledge’. It is the branch of knowledge devoted to the examination of basic concepts such as truth, existence, reality, cause and freedom.” NB. Socrates is seen as the founding father of Western philosophy. He was forced by the Greek authorities to drink hemlock (poison) because he taught young people to think for themselves.

LO: To understand what Philosophy is and analyse different types of truth What is Philosophy? ‘Big Questions’ are questions that can’t be easily answered and don’t have evidence to back up any answers that are given. Try answering some of these: Why are we here? Did someone or something create the universe? Why are there good and bad things in life? Why do some people suffer more than others? What happens next? Add two of your own ‘Big Questions’
