By: Justis Cook How much data can a disk hold?

CD-Rs can hold up to a maximum of 700MB of data on them or about 80minutes of audio playback. There are some variations to CD-Rs such as the 90 minute/790 MB and 99 minute/870 MB disc. These disks arent commonly seen and when read by a computer only show up as a standard 80minute disk and have to have a special software to use the extra space on them.

Untill 2002 DVD-Rs were the only types of DVD to choose from. Now there are 2 types and the only difference is the newer DVD+Rs have a more precise way when they write data to the disk so there are no errors when burning. Both types of disks can hold 4.7GB of data or they can hold up to 8.5GB of data. On a standard DVD±R data is only read from the bottom, reflective side of the disk, on DVD±R DL disks data is written to both sides of the disk to maximize the data that can be held on it.

Blue-ray disks got their name because they were designed to supersede the DVD and were able to store so much more data by using a blue laser to read the disk which uses shorter wavelengths than previous red lasers. Blue-ray disks have 4 layer capabilities; Single layer disks can hold 25GB of data, Dual- 50GB, Triple- 100GB, Quadruple- 128GB. As of now the limitations of Blue-ray disks are 128GB but theyre experimenting with disks that can hold up to 200GB on a single side!

How much data can a (standard)CD, DVD, and Blue-ray Disk hold? What is the difference between a DVD-R and a DVD+R? How much data are they trying to put on a Blue-ray disk?
