Multimedia CES Industries, Inc. Lesson 11

 Mass storage device which stores information optically instead of magnetically. CD-ROM CES Industries, Inc.

 A laser beam burns microscopic pits (1) and flats or lands (0) on the surface of the disk.  When laser light strikes the pits and lands and reflect the light back, the reflection or non- reflection becomes the 0 or 1 that represents the data stored on the disk. How it works CES Industries, Inc.

 No physical contact with disk; a CD can last forever. Advantage CES Industries, Inc.

1.The CD-ROM is 5 1/4” 2. The CD-ROM spins at different speeds depending upon where the read head (laser) is positioned. Speed increases as the read head moves towards the inner edge of the CD. Facts CES Industries, Inc.

3. CDs are available in 66 minutes (550 MB), 74 minutes (660 MB), or 80 minutes (700 MB) 3. CDs are available in 66 minutes (550 MB), 74 minutes (660 MB), or 80 minutes (700 MB). 4.Very low cost per megabyte of capacity Facts CES Industries, Inc.

5.CD-Recordable and CD-ReWriteable have become the defacto standard for all removable mass storage devices, soon to completely replace the floppy disk drive in all computers. Facts CES Industries, Inc.

6. Multi-Layer CD-ROMs are in development to add 2 to 4 times the storage capacity to the existing CD-ROM standard. Facts CES Industries, Inc.

1. DVDs are the same physical size as CD-ROM disks, but use different lasers to read the data. The result is greater capacity. Digital Versatile Disks (DVDs) CES Industries, Inc.

2. Store 4.7 GB of data on a single disk DVDs CES Industries, Inc.

3. Recordable and Rewriteable versions of the DVD standard are currently available at prices under $400.00 for the recorders. Disk prices are still very expensive when compared to CD-ROMs. DVD-R disks cost $4.00 each and CD-R disk $0.17 each. DVDs CES Industries, Inc.

1. No mulitmedia computer is complete without sound Audio Systems CES Industries, Inc.

2. Sound cards take digital audio signals and convert them directly to analog audio, usually with built-in amplification. Audio Systems CES Industries, Inc.
