Presentation transcript:

The absolute value of each deviation. Absolute Deviation The absolute value of each deviation.

Balance Point When you look at a number line of a set of data, the mean can be thought of as the point at which the number line would balance.

Box-and-Whisker Plots A graph that summarizes data using the median, the upper and lower quartiles (Q1 and Q3), and the minimum and maximum values.

A data value indicates how far the data value is from the mean. Deviation A data value indicates how far the data value is from the mean.

Five Number Summary It consists of (1) the minimum value, (2) the first quartile, (3) the median, (4) the third quartile, and (5) the maximum.

Interquartile Range (IQR) The difference between the third quartile (Q3) and the first quartile (Q1). It indicates the range of the middle 50% of the data.

The arithmetic average of the numbers in a data set. Mean The arithmetic average of the numbers in a data set.

Mean Absolute Deviation The average or mean of the absolute deviations.

Measure of Center It tells you how data are clustered, or where the “center” of the data is.

Measures of Variation or Variability It describes how spread out or clustered the data are in a data set.

Median The middle number in a data set when the values are placed in order from least to greatest.

The data value or values that occur most frequently in a data set. Mode The data value or values that occur most frequently in a data set.

Outlier A number in the data set that is significantly lesser or greater than the other numbers.

Quartiles When data in a set are arranged in order and it is the numbers that split the data into quarters (or fourths).

The difference between the maximum and minimum values in a data set. Range The difference between the maximum and minimum values in a data set.
