Why is service important to the Sikh faith?

Learning objective – to be able to understand and explain the importance of service in the Sikh faith. I can describe why service is central to the Sikh faith. Level 3 I can explain and give examples of how service is important in the Sikh faith. Level 5 I can apply to my won life the principles of service in the Sikh faith and compare and contrast this with examples. Level 6

Starter – List all the ways in which you are served and where you serve someone during an average week in your life. Compare this list with the person next to you.

What is seva? Seva is the principle of selfless service to God’s creation. This principle is very important in the Sikh faith. Seva reminds Sikhs that when you serve others that you are really serving God because He is in everything He creates. ‘You shall find peace, doing seva …… in the midst of this world do seva ….’ Guru Granth Sahib

How is seva structured? There are three parts to seva Tan – this includes physical service. Man – this includes mental service. Dhan – this includes charitable service and giving time to others.

Tan – physical service

Man – mental service

Dhan - material service

Which do you think is the most popular form of seva?

The most popular form of service is dhan The most popular form of service is dhan. Many Sikhs focus on giving things to others in time of need.

Tasks Copy and complete the table below, giving five examples for each type of service a Sikh could do. Man Tan Dhan Applying what you have learned this lesson and the diagram on your worksheet, create a plan for a service that you think you could provide – with no reward – for your community. Extension Create a design using words, images and symbols, around the words of Guru Nanak – ‘You shall find peace doing seva’, showing the different ways in which Sikhs can serve God and the world.

Homework Design a logo for a campaign to promote seva for the local gurdwara who wants to improve their service within the community. What would you include?
