Book Summary: Society The book, Brave New World ,takes place in a futuristic society in London, England. The society is referred to as the World State. This society encourages promiscuity and the use of government-funded prescription pills called “soma” in order to escape unhappiness and challenges in life. The citizens of the World State are in a constant state of ignorant bliss. The social status, overall way of life, and physical attributes are pre-determined before birth. Embryos are designed and copied to produce certain social classes. The lower social classes have many genetic copies that are physically weak and unintelligent, while the higher classes are strong and intelligent with no genetic copies.

Book Summary-Plot One of the main characters, Lenina Crowne who is part of the highest social class, has been steadily dating a man named Henry Foster for four months. This monogamy is looked at as strange and she is pressured to date someone else. The person she begins dating is named Bernard Marx, another main character. He is also of the highest social class, Alpha, but is physically weak which is an anomaly to others. Bernard and Lenina take a vacation to a Reservation in New Mexico, where they are shocked and disgusted at the differences in the tribe. They soon meet a woman named Linda who used to be a part of the World State, but was lost and became stranded in the Reservation She and her son John go to England with Lenina and Bernard to experience their lifestyle. John is now disgusted and shocked at what is considered social normality. He is frustrated by the rules and regulations and refuses to comply. One day, he even tries to start a rebellion, which ultimately fails. After seeing what society is truly like, John chooses to run away, instead of continuing to live in the World State. Even though, he has run away from the city itself, he cannot fully escape from the sexual deviance. Eventually, he kills himself because he cannot deal with this lifestyle.

Why was this book BANNED? This book was banned and challenged in multiple schools, because it contains sexual, drug, and suicidal content. It also promotes promiscuity and has an overall negative outlook on the future of society. It was removed from the Alabama High School library and was challenged in a California high school .

Censorship? According to the Columbia Encyclopedia, “ Censorship is the suppression of speech or other communication which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient to the general body of people as determined by a government, media outlet, or other controlling body.” We feel that this definition correctly describes censorship. Also that even though people may use censorship as what they believe is a form of protection, we personally think that this practice goes against the Constitutional rights. We stand firmly in our belief of freedom of speech and that censorship is only another way to cut that off. Even though people may try to destroy the ideas that some of these books may contain, the knowledge that they contain will always remain.
