3. Point of View
3rd person omniscient because the reader always knows what the 3 main characters are thinking which this gives the reader a sense of knowing the characters which makes understanding their world that much easier.

4. Main Characters - John
John
He appears in the novel once Bernard and Lenina’s trip to the reservation.
He is an outsider in his own Indian Culture because he isn’t Indian and wants to see the “brave new world”
Throughout the novel he realizes the new world is a terrible place and tries to show people that in turn becomes an outsider in this society.
He is the ultimate outsider
Throughout the book he quotes Shakespeare because that’s the only book he ever read this causes him to see the world like Shakespeare.

5. Bernard Marx
He is an alpha with limitations mainly being short like a gamma which cause gossip to be stirred against him.
He criticizes the society and shows love-lust, etc. for Lenina which the society promotes as that exists.
Irony kicks in because once Bernard finds John, he strives and participate in what he criticized the society for like big orgies. He becomes the ultimate hypocrite.
All this happens till his ultimate downfall.
The reader like him cause he shows human equalities in a non-human society.

6. Lenina Crowne
She is critical for the plot of the story but not that main of a character.
She’s a complete loyalist to the society by following the rules.
She loves John or lusts and plays around with Bernard.
She can’t comprehend why Bernard criticizes the society and why John hates it.
She connects with people with sex which is the norm for the society she lives in.
She causes much trouble for John by the way she accepts society.

7. Sub-characters
Helmholtz Watson- Friends with Bernard that also hates society. He wants to use his writing talent for some greater purpose. He is smarter than Bernard and has better complaints than Bernard.
Mustapha Mond- One of the 10 world controllers. He eventually catches Helm., Ber., and John in their defiance. He does illegal activity like read Shakespeare but he believes in the Society unlike John.
Linda- John’s mom that was a beta but an accident led her to the reservation. She too returns to society to enter a soma high everyday on the spot.

8. Conflict
The plot begins with Bernard talking about how much he hates society mainly due to his short stature compared to other alphas. He has lust for Lenina who eventually he decided to take to a New Mexico Reservation. She agreed to it. On the side Bernard talks with Helmholtz about how much society needs to change because no one is free and there really is no individualism. Society at the time is controlled by these 10 controllers. They use a drug called soma to help send people into a holiday high. Society promotes sex because strong emotions must be allowed or uprising can occur. They make people in a factory by the thousands of twins each designated to a class, Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma, Ephilson. Each with their own job and with Alpha’s on top.

9. Conflict Con’t
Skip ahead to the Reservation. Bernard finds John and Linda, two people of the new world that was left behind and raised in the old. He takes them back to London.
Bernard gains fame and power so he became a hypocrite of himself. He loses power because John refused to be a tool and tries to prove how bad this society is. At the same time John has lust toward Lenina and wants to marry Lenina who doesn’t understand the concept. This causes John much anger which causes many scenes throughout the book and many quotes from Shakespeare to describe Lenina or how John feels about something. John’s rebellious acts cause so much disruption he gets arrested with Helmholtz and Bernard after John’s mother dies.

10. Resolution
John stays in London after his arrest while Helmholtz and Bernard get exiled to Iceland.
John escapes though and goes to live in a lighthouse which turns out bad later on with a surprising ending.

11. Themes
First too much state power is a bad thing because the government controls people by using soma thus they are always happy but lose their morals.
Second is people are not able to face truth in society which is evident by people’s addiction to soma to get out of the problems that arise in their lives.
Thirdly – people should not cancel away normal science because Mond’s job is to destroy all books that would allow independent thoughts which are books of science.

12. "All of the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects.“ Chapter 3 pg 54
The quote is said be Henry Foster to Bernard talking about the advantages of soma.
This shows how society views soma and the importance of it.
My personal connection is that I believe that listening to music brings these effects. For some reason while I listen to music I am happy and feel great about life. There really is no defects to listening to some really good music in life. Music is my soma.

13. “When the individual feels, the community reels.“Chapter 6 pg 94
The quote is Lenina stating rules that they been taught as kids using a technique called hypnopedia.
It shows how society controls the people.
I like the quote because I believe in the exact opposite since I am an individualist that what's self-thought. The quote is just appealing by how easily people can be controlled in this society. I say go individual which will promote society to be strong not weaken it.
