National Curriculum

Aims of the Mathematics National Curriculum The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils: become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

NC Progression in calculating Year 2 Multiplication and Division recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division within the multiplication tables and write them using the multiplication (×), division (÷) and equals (=) signs show that multiplication of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division of one number by another cannot solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts.

The aims of the project are: To raise standards in mathematics and numeracy with fun and joy of number at the heart of all aspects of the strategy To challenge perceptions and change attitudes towards number and mathematics To raise the profile of numeracy through a range of activities, events and resources with an emphasis on the application to real life contexts To bring relevance to numeracy through problem solving set in local contexts To involve parents and the local business and cultural communities To creating a sustainable legacy of a love of numbers We will, therefore, be holding events throughout this school year to help everyone to have fun and improve their mathematical skills.
