Interpreting Editorial Cartoons

What is an Editorial Cartoon? Background What different kinds of cartoons can you think of?

What is an Editorial Cartoon? Editorial Cartoons An illustration or comic strip containing a political or social opinion, that usually relates to current events or personalities. The cartoon’s opinion can usually can be summed up in a sentence or two.

Analyzing an Editorial Cartoon Consider what position the cartoonist takes and why s/he takes that position. Think of the cartoon as a complex argument before responding to it. The cartoon does more than simply present a point of view. It invites the reader to take part in a meaningful dialogue.

What is an Editorial Cartoon? Who or what is the focus of this cartoon? What is the political or social message of this cartoon?

Directions: As you look at the following cartoons, on a piece of paper: Write down the main point of the cartoon (1-2 sentences) List and explain the features of the cartoon that best make the cartoonist’s point.
