Solving Equations A Step by step approach

Examine Look to see what operation is being used X + 4 = 7

Undo If the problem has addition in it, you are going to use the inverse operation (subtraction) to undo the addition. X + 4 = 7 -4 -4

Solve So X = 3

Check Does 3 +4 = 7 Yes so it checks

Examine Y - 5 = 9 What operation do you see?

Undo Y - 5 = 9 +5 =5 If the problem has subtraction in it, you are going to use the inverse operation (addition) to undo it.

Solve So Y = 14

Check Does 14 - 5 = 9 Yes so it checks!

Examine 2X = 18 What operation do you see?

Undo 2X = 18 2 2 If the problem has multiplication in it, you are going to use the inverse operation (division) to undo it.

Solve X = 9

Check Does 18/2 = 9 Yes! So it checks!

Examine A/3 = 4 What operation do you see?

Undo A/3 (3) = 4 (3) If the problem has division in it,you are going to use the inverse operation (multiplication) to undo it.

Solve A = 12

Check Does 12/3 = 4 Yes so it checks!
